I HAVE A 1993 GEO TRACKER, 2WD, 5 SPD. I GET 28 MPG WHICH IS WHAT IT IS
DESIGNED TO GIVE. IS IT POSSIBLE TO CHANGE THE 5TH GEAR IN MY TRACKER
WITH THE 5TH GEAR OF A GEO METRO THAT GIVES 40+ MPG.
IS THERE ANY OTHER WAY I CAN CHANGE THE GEAR RATIOS TO MAKE A
DIFFERENCE

THANK YOU RHONDINE

can change the rear gear unit and have the tranny gears swapped out, but its not cheap.

Have you checked eBay ? I frequently check for parts for my '91 LSi 4x4. There are currently 15 pages listed.

would that work? i doubt you would get a 12MPG increase with changing the gears from a car that gets better mileage.

There are a lot of other factors that give the Metro such good mileage.

For one, I don't know if you are talking about the three or four cylinder version but your car has four. Changing the gears is not going to give you the mileage of a three cylinder.

Your car also is more aerodynamically inefficient than the Metro. It requires more effort to keep it moving, thus decreasing fuel economy.

Your car also weighs more than a Metro, which also makes it harder to get moving, thus also decreasing mileage.

The transmission in your car was designed to work with your car's powerband, providing the best possible performance with significant regard to fuel economy and comfort. Changing out the gears with a Metro may not only decrease your performance, it may also decrease your fuel economy. If I were you, I'd stick with the transmission you have.

EDIT: And what the hell? I just noticed how old this thread was.
