I have a 98 grand prix, It all started with a dead battery, I ended up smoking the heavy gauge wire on the starter, melted it in half. I spliced that together and everything seemed to be O.K. Now I have a intermittent problem.....my wife says, that sometimes when she shuts the car off, theres a clicking sound. She can't tell if its in the steering column or under the dash or under the hood....Yesterday the car wouldn't shut off for about 3 tries.
This car has a after market remote start on it, which hasn't worked since I smoked the wire.
There also seems to be 2 fuseable links at the same lug on the starter where the big red wire was. I tugged on them and didn't seem to stretch, but I didn't think to check continuity on them.
The remote starter has a thin guage wire going to a connector by the 3 coils. smoke appeared to come from around that area that day also.
How I smoked the wires........I replaced the dead battery with the one out of my stored corvette, that I had charged and put down cellar for the winter. When I went to put the negeative cable on the battery, it really sparked more than normal. I went ahead and hooked it on anyway, and almost immediately the smoke started from under the motor and near the coils up top....I removed the cable and took battery out, and bought a new one.
Another question would be ...what could be up with the corvette battery??? It was hooked up right, but why was it wanting to arc so bad???
