I just bought a 1984 brat, It runs well but there is a light that comes by the charging light . The "battery" does not glow but a little light in the lower left of that box comes on. Glows orange. I can not find out what that means. Seems to be over charging sometimes going to red area on scale. What Does this little orange box mean. Book on it doesn't mention it. I don't want to blow up the engine.. Anyone know what this means?? Any help would be very helpful.
Thank -you Tuff

Are there any symbols or text on the light?? What is the voltage reading in # when you say it is in the red area?
Hello and thanks,
The orange light that comes on is IN the volt box. Has a picture of the battery on lower right side. That never glows. The meter gauge in middle starts the red area at 8 to ten low end. 11-16 is in normal range, 16 -18 is top end red. The indicator line was keeping about 12 to 13. But at times it goes to 18 all the way to the TOP of the red area. Car runs great but am worried I might be hurting it by running it in the red area.Seems to be staying in the red area more the last two times I drove it. Have a brand new battery in it. Any ideas on what I should have checked out first??
Thank-you Tuff

Your battery has nothing to do with engine voltage, it's all about the alternator output. If the connection from the alternator to the harness is bad or if the alternator is overcharging it could cause this problem. Did you just notice this type of voltage or has it always been that high and you never noticed?
