I have a 2000 Impala, 3.4L, and I'm having some problems with it surging/hesitating, usually when going uphill. It will do this at speeds usually around 80-95 kms/hour. Once I kick it down, the symptons usually go away. Any ideas what it might be? I had the fuel filter and oil changed about 2 months ago and my mechanic said that a couple of the wires were dirty and he cleaned them. It ran well for a couple of weeks after but it's back to doing it again.

Thanks

First things first you cant clean a wire (spark plug wire) and make it run better!!!!!!!!!! Unless you have corrosion at the terminal (unlikely)

1. Now how many miles does it have?????????

2. Have you ever replaced the spark plug wires or the spark plugs?????????

3. Did the problem start before or after the fuel filter replacement?????????

It sounds like you have a spark plug wire arcing to ground, a worn out spark plug or a weak fuel pump

Thanks for the reply. It has about 105,000 miles on it and the plugs were changed about 10,000 miles ago. I'm not sure if he changed the plug wires at that time but I suppose I could try that for a start.
The problem was there before he changed the fuel filter. He said that the one that he took out was pretty dirty.
Other than this problem that occurs only at certain speeds/conditions, the car runs very well.

Thanks

I recommend to replace the wires

Sometimes when an old fuel filter is replaced the fuel pump will go out because it is not used to the newfree flowing fuel filter but that does not appear to be your problem

Did you have any check engine lights

No, the check engine light hasn't been coming on. I'm going to try replacing the wires and see how that goes.

Thanks
